Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement Siding: A Homeowner's Guide

Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement Siding: A Homeowner's Guide

When it is time to re-side a home, the choice almost always comes down to vinyl or fiber cement. Both are excellent — for different reasons.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl is the most affordable option and the most popular siding in America. Modern vinyl looks far better than the flimsy products of decades past, resists moisture completely, and never needs painting. Repairs are cheap and easy, and it handles Midwest temperature swings well. The trade-off: it can crack on hard impact, and extreme hail can dent it.

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement (like Hardie board) is a premium product. It is fire resistant, immune to woodpeckers and rot, and holds paint for 15+ years. It mimics wood clapboard beautifully, which is why it boosts resale value. The trade-off: a higher upfront cost and a longer installation.

Our Take

For most homes in the Metro East, quality vinyl delivers the best value. If you are renovating a higher-end home or plan to stay for decades, fiber cement is a worthwhile upgrade.

We install and repair both, and we will help you pick based on your home — not our profit margin.
